In South Africa, owning a pool is often part of the dream lifestyle—but it also comes with serious responsibility. At Designer Covers, we’ve spent more than a decade working with families who love their pool yet worry about safety, water loss, and ongoing pool maintenance. From the very first conversation, one thing is clear: pool safety is never optional.
As a South African business serving homeowners across South Africa, we understand the realities of local weather, water restrictions, child safety concerns, and the need for long-term, practical solutions. A high-quality pool cover is one of the simplest upgrades you can make, yet it delivers life-saving protection, real cost savings, and daily peace of mind.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about choosing the best pool cover for your home—without the sales fluff.
Why Pool Safety Matters More Than Ever
A pool should be a place of relaxation, not anxiety. Yet every year, accidents involving children, pets, and even adults happen due to unsecured pool areas and poor safety features. Preventing someone from falling into the pool accidentally is the foundation of any safe pool setup.
Unlike temporary barriers, a properly installed pool safety cover protects the entire pool surface. It creates a physical barrier that supports weight, limits access, and reduces the risk of anyone unintentionally entering the pool.
For any pool owner, safety isn’t just about compliance—it’s about responsibility.
How a Pool Cover Improves Pool Safety
A modern safety pool cover does far more than just cover water. It delivers layered protection:
- Safety by preventing accidental access to the pool
- Strong materials that support weight for child safety and pet safety
- Clear boundaries around the pool area
- Added safety during the off-season or pool for winter
Our solid safety cover and automatic vinyl safety covers are designed with strict safety standards in mind, making them far more reliable than outdated safety nets or a basic pool net alone.
Pool Covers vs Safety Nets: What’s the Difference?
Many South African homeowners compare covers and pool safety nets when upgrading their pool. While both add protection, they are not equal.
Safety nets and a pool safety net can prevent full submersion, but they still allow debris, rain, and dirt through—making it harder to keep your pool clean. They also don’t stop heat loss or evaporation.
A solid safety cover, such as a Powerplastics solid safety cover, seals the entire surface. It blocks debris from entering the pool, improves swimming pool safety, and dramatically reduces evaporation.
For families wanting added safety and long-term value, a full safety pool cover is the superior option.
Beyond Safety: The Everyday Benefits of Pool Covers
While safety is the top priority, a well-designed swimming pool cover offers practical benefits you’ll notice immediately:
Reduced Water Loss
Evaporation is one of the biggest causes of water waste. Using a pool cover can reduce evaporation by up to 90%, helping you save water and protect your pool water levels.
Cleaner Pool, Less Work
A cover stops leaves, insects, and debris from entering the pool—keeping your pool clean and cutting down on chemicals and cleaning time.
Energy Efficiency
Whether you have a solar pool, thermal pool, or heated system, covers retain warmth and extend the swimming season.
Long-Term Cost Savings
Lower water usage, fewer chemicals, and reduced wear on equipment mean better value over time.
How Pool Covers Improve Daily Pool Hygiene
Understanding Pool Cover Options
Not all pools—or homeowners—are the same. At Designer Covers, we design solutions around different types of pools, layouts, and lifestyles.

An automatic pool cover offers unmatched convenience. With the push of a button, your pool is sealed and secure. Our automatic covers include advanced systems like the pooldeck slatted automatic option, perfect for modern homes or an automated pool design.
Solid Covers and PVC Options
Our solid covers, including durable PVC pool cover and pvc pool systems, are engineered for strength, longevity, and daily use—even in challenging environments like pool covers Cape Town, where wind and debris are common.
